Nissan Repair: Intermittent Speedometer reading, nissan maxima, older models

Question
I  have a1998 Nissan Maxima,  the speedometer and odometer work intermittently.  The needle will bounce around and then fall back to zero.  The unit seems to only work in warm weather.  I live in upstate NY so it hasn't worked all winter.  The main problem is that it causes the check engine light o come on which means I can not pass inspection.

Answer
John,

Replace the speed sensor and the problem should go away.  It is located on the transmission where the cable used to go on older models.  Disconnect the battery for five minutes and then reconnect it and the light should go out.  Drive the car for two days so the computer will not rat you out for resetting it.  The SMOG guys know if the check engine light has just been turned out.
