Hi Again -

Thanks for your reply.  I purchased and installed all 6 ignition coils for my 2000 Maxima SE.  They were the proper coils.

The Service Engine light stays on, however.  I disconnected the battery and reconnected, hoping that would re-set the computer.

Should the SES light have gone out right away?

FYI - I saved about $400 doing it myself.

Hi -

I recently visited a Nissan dealer after getting a "Service Engine" light after 58K miles.  The guy said that one of my coils was burned out - but he couldn't tell which one.  So, he said that all 6 needed replacing for $932.00.

Can I buy coils after market and replace them easily myself?  I'm a DIYer - but not with cars.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul,

The coils will about $300 bucks and you can do it yourself easy.  Go to rockauto.com and buy them or go to a good parts store.  You need an allen wrench to get the front cover off the valve cover and you will see that there is a ten millimeter bolt that holds each on.  Take one off at a time and replace them.  They just unplug from the harness and they come with a new plug wire too.  You will need a long extension to get to the back ones and they come out pretty easy.  It just looks difficult since they are between the intake runners.  But, you can get to them all.  I used a swivel to allow easier access to the bolts and if you have a magnet on a stick it will help in getting the bolts in and out.  Not much room for the hands but it is really not difficult.  Now, would be a good time to get another set of plugs and I bought autolites as a replacement.

Paul,

The SES will not reset itself and you did the correct thing in disconnecting the battery.

Answer
The SES will not reset with the condition you have.  It might over fifty cycles of the ignition.  That is you drove the car fifty times for the memory to forget the problem.  I would disconnect the battery for five minutes and the code should be gone.  This drains the caps in the computer and lets the memory clear.
