Nissan Repair: Engine randomly dies, nissn, optical pickup

Question
I have a 1991 nissn pathfinder v6.  I have changed the fuel filter.  What is happening is that it keeps randomly dieing it might go a day or 2 or 10 or 20 miles then it will just die instantly.  I turn the key over and it will restart most of the time.  Last week it died like 3 times in a 1/2 mile then it wouldn't restart.  i came back an hour later and it started.  Is there any information you could help me with?

Answer
Ken,

Check he distributor for oil on the pickup.  Under the cap and the rotor there is a cover that covers the optical pickup.  This pickup gets contaminated with oil and the engine will die.  Take the rotor off and the rotor post off and the two phillups screws that hold the cover on and you will see if there is oil on the optical pickup.  If there is replace the distributor with a rebuilt unit.
