Nissan Repair: 1991 Pathfinder starting problem, fuel pump relay, fuse block

Question
Hello,  I'm having trouble starting my Pathfinder but I'm not sure it's the starter that's the problem.  It's a 1991 manual trans. 4WD Pathfinder.  For about a week I'd had intermittent starting...sometimes I'd have to turn the key several times before the engine would turn over.  Then after that week I couldn't get the engine to turn over at all.  The battery is brand new, the alternator is fine, I don't think it's the switch engaged by pressing in the clutch.  If I turn the key slowly through each increment, I can hear a series of relays clicking but I did notice something I thought might be worth mentioning.  Above the fuse block there are three relays.  From left to right...a brown one then two blue ones.  When turning the key I can hear (and feel) the brown one and the center blue one engage, but I wasn't sure the blue one on the right ever did.  Thinking that it might be bad I switched the two blue relays around and then tried turning the key again.  The same thing happened the center relay (previously in the righthand position) clicked but the right relay did not.  Is this an indication that there is something wrong with the ignition switch?  How can I tell that there's nothing wrong with it?  I also hear a larger blue relay on the passenger side inner fender clicking when I turn the key if that's important.  On a side note I started to take the starter out to have it tested but I ran into a problem with one of the two bolts that hold it in.  It's directly behind the exhaust and I can't figure out how to get a socket or box wrench on it.  Is it necessary to remove the exhaust to get to this bolt?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Patrick

Answer
Patrick,

The relays do different things from powering the computer to the starter circuit and the other one is the fuel pump relay.  The problem you have sounds like the starter to me.  You can check this by hotwiring to the small terminal on the starter from the positive side of the battery.  With the truck in neutral touch the hot wire to the terminal and if the starter turns it is fine.  If not replace the starter.
