Nissan Repair: 92 Pathfinder fuel/starting problem, rotor shaft, phillips screw

Question
Thanks so much for your very quick reply!

The Pathfinder does have a distributor.   Is the cam position sensor replaceable or must the whole distributor be replaced?

My husband did remove the distributor cap and didn't notice a sensor inside....

Thanks again for your help.

Need help with 92 Pathfinder V6 - husband is at the end of his rope!  Here's the short version of the saga:

Came home the other day running fine. Shut it off and the next day it wouldn't start.  It turns over just fine but won't start.  Will run with starting fluid.  Replaced the fuel pump and filter with no change in behavior.  Tested the relays and they seem to be okay.  It is getting fuel to the injectors but seems injectors are not firing.

Any ideas?

Jennifer,

The injectors are controlled through the use of a cam position sensor.  If the sensor is old and defective as a 92 would be that is where I would start.  Now, if the car has a distributor the sensor is in there.  But, if the engine is distributorless then the sensor is in the timing cover.

Answer
Jennifer,

Under the distributor there is a cover that is under the rotor.  Under that cover is an optical pickup.  When the vehicle gets old the oil seal fails and the optical pickup gets oil on it and that is what makes the engine cut out.  I would remove the cap and rotor and the rotor shaft.  It is held on by a phillips screw and then the cover is held on by two phippips screws.  Then you can see if there is oil on the pickup.  Remember how the rotor shaft goes on and be sure to tighten it down if there is no oil in the distributor.  If there is replace the distributor.  In a 92 I would imagine this is the problem.  I have done several with this problem.
