Nissan Repair: 98 Nissan Sentra wont start, nissan sentra, clutch assembly

Question
Please help!  The car tries to start but won't turn over.  replaced fuel filter. still won't start.  someone said may be belt in ac compressor locking up engine.  is this true?  if so can belt be replaced or does the entire compressor need replacing?

Answer
Ann,

If the compressor is locking up it will prevent the car from starting.  That is, if the bearing in the clutch assembly is locked or the clutch is locked up.  Take the belt off and see if the car will start.  If it does replace the compressor and receiver dryer.  The compressor, if locked is junk and will need to be replaced and the parts stores will not warranty it without a new receiver dryer.  You see, if the compressor fails it allows metal parts to get into the receiver dryer and if that happened then it would cycle through the system and then it would trash the new compressor.  So, take the belt off and see if it does the trick.
