Nissan Repair: check engine light, nissan altima, two and a half years

Question
I own a 96 Nissan Altima that's in good condition. I'm not sure of the mileage because the odometer stopped at 102,000+ about two and a half years ago. Three days ago my "check engine" light came on and stayed on. The car seems to be driving fine, although it idled a little rough this morning when I started it -- but I was parked on a hill and normally I park it in the garage. Does Nissan program the "check engine" light to come on at certain intervals, say every 60,000 miles? Or could it be a reminder to change oil? I had it changed four months ago. Also, two days ago, my speedometer was stuck on 0 for about 15 minutes. Could this be related to "check engine" light?

Answer
Kimberly,

No, the check engine light is for engine control problems only.  It does not come on so you will take it in.  Take the car to Autozone or Checker and get them to check the code for free.  They will tel you what the code means and what parts need to be replaced.  Email me back with the findings.
