Nissan Repair: Turning signal problem for 1998 Nissan, signal problem, turn signals

Question
Hi

I previously sent an email that I have an issue with my 1998 nissan gxe as the turning signals are being shorted out. You had responded with that I should replace the combination switch on the column which I did this morning at my dealership, On the way home the directionals again shorted out. Any additional suggestions as it is starting to get very expensive for the repairs  Thank you

Answer
Larry,

So, the turn signals were working when you picked up the car and now they are not.  When you say shorted do you mean the fuse burnt out?  Or, is there something that was not connected properly.  The connector under the dash that connects the cars harness to the combination switch should have pulled loose if the mechanic did not get it all the way in.  Also, there is the possibility that you have corrosion in the circuit where the turn signal indicators ground.  Check out front, under the hood and look for single wires behind each headlight and see where they connect to chassis ground.  If the connection is corroded or loose this could also cause your problem.  YOu did not say if it makes the click sound when you turn the signal left or right.  The flasher should be replaced since the circuit was defective and now you have a new switch.  Parts tend to fail at close to the same time since the actuaries that plan for the building of parts and when they fail to be close to the same time.  So, check the fuse, check the grounds up front and replace the flasher and get back with me and let me know what you find.
