Nissan Repair: nissan fuel leak, hose clamps, hose size

Question
there is a leak in the rubber hose that runs from my fuel line to my tank. i want to replace the hose but i dont know how to get to the end of the hose in the fuel pump, do i have to remove the tank to get to it? is there an easier way to "fix" this problem?

Answer
Trent,

It sucks but the tank has to come down unless you have one where you can get to the top of the tank where the fuel pump is.  Some later models of Nissans have an access panel under the seat in the rear that allows you to get to the line and then you can snake another line in and connect it.  The last one I did was an 86 Stanza and it required dropping the tank since there was no access.  It is really not that big a deal since there is nothing in the way of dropping the tank.  But, you do want to do it with the tank close to empty since it weighs so much.  Also, go to Nissan and get the correct hose size since it is Japanese the hose is different in diameter than what you would get from your local parts store.  It would be worth an extra couple of bucks to get the correct size.  Also, get new hose clamps while you are at it as the old ones that I have done are corroded and have to be replaced.  There are four bolts that hold the tank up or a couple of clamps that have bolts.  Either way, jack up the car and support it with stands and block the wheels.  Then get a jack and a piece of wood as not to dent the tank and suppor the tank before you take the bolts loose.  Then lower the tank.  Somewhere in here you will need to remove the filler hose to allow the tank to come down.  And, not too far as the wiring to the fuel pump will be stretched.  As you let it down you can look in from the side and see how far you can go.  Also, do not use a incandecent light.  If it is dropped you will start a fire if it breaks.  Have a spotter with a fire extinguisher when you do it and you will be fine.  You can never be too careful.
