Nissan Repair: fuel or electrical, nissan sentra gxe, nissan sentra

Question
hi...thanks for helping...heard your're the best...anyway, have a 1996 nissan sentra gxe 4cyl 1.6l...engine has just started spuddering and misfiring...acts as though it is fuel starved... when accelerating, it misses and hard to get to speed...1 time it stalled out, only re-started when I didn't press on accelerator, could this be the beginning of the fuel pump dying or a pressure regulator or an electrical problem? thanks!!!!!

Answer
Steve,

Check to make sure that the intake hose to the engine is not torn.  If it has a crack and you accelerate the crack will open up giving the car unmetered air.  This will cause the problem you describe.  Also, if the fuel pump is going out it can cause the problem too.  If yours has a distributor you could have oil on the optical pickup and that would cause the problem too.  So, check these and email me back and we'll go from there.
