Nissan Repair: brakes, star wheel, lug nuts

I have a 1993 Nissan Quest mini van. I brought it in for new tires and the technician working in the vehicle recommended new shoes in the rear. I decided to look at them myself and they look fine but I did come across something else. The driver rear wheel is binding and is not rotating as freely as the opposite wheel. I adjusted the star wheel and no difference was made. The hub seems to rotate easily without the drum on. But I did discovered that when the drum assembly is all together and I put on lug nuts and tighten them it then becomes difficult to rotate the assembly. There appears to be no visible damage or noise to the whole assembly itself. Any thoughts or questions would help greatly to solving this mystery. Thank you.

Lee,

Check to see if the drum is out of round.  Since the introduction of non asbestos brakes strange things like warped drums and surface hardening of the metal occurs.  I would have the drum turned and that should do the trick.  But, if you turn one you should turn the other one.

Von,
Assuming that the drum is without defect and not out of round, do you have any other thoughts that might be helpful. I remember adjusting the star wheel almost to it's minimum setting. Along with that I did use the drum from the other side of the wheel and I had the same problem.  Another note that I missed was that when the drum was on without the pressure of the lug nuts holding it down it was able to rotate freely. Hopefully this all makes sense. Again your thoughts and expertise is much appreciated.

Answer
Check for inner wear on the backing plate where the drum is not supposed to touch.  You could have a defective bearing allowing contact.  The dege of the backing plate, around the circumference will have shiny spots on it.  If this is the case and both drums do touch and dran I would change the bearing out.  That is, unless the boneheads at the shop let the wheel contact the backing plate in taking the tires off and it is just bent a little at the top.  If that is the case I would smack it back in place with a hammer.  But, you have to be careful not to move it too much.
