how do i fix a valve tap? I have a 1990 Nissan 240sx hatchback SE.

I assume you mean that the rockers are ticking?  If this is the case get a book and find the cold and hot lash clearance.  Buy a valvecover gasket and take the valvecover off and adjust the valves.  I am sure if it is that old you have some play in the clearance department.  It is messy but not difficult since you just tighten them up until they are within specs and lock them down.  Do one at a time and make sure the cam follower is on the base circle of the cam and you should be fine.
