Nissan Repair: 1987 Nissan puickup electrical problems., nissan pickup, seventeen years

Question
Hi Von I have a 1987 Nissan Pickup and love the truck. But recently it has started blowing a fuse when I turn on the lights. It first was ok with running on only but would blow when the headlights were turned on (headlights would still work though). Tonight it blew for the first time in about a week and a half as soon as I turned the running lights on. the hazard and headlights still work. I did have a cracked signal lense (driver side) that allowed water to corode the bulb into the socket but I replaced the bulb and cleaned out the socket as best I could. Also the heater control inside the cab for the fan speed(1, 2, or 3) Never worked since I bought it, any thoughts on that one as well? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Answer
Shon,

First I would replace the headlight switch since you have identified any other possible area that could be blowing fuses.  The master switch is an easy replacement and you do not ahve to take the steering wheel off.  Just remove the column cover and the rest is easy.  Change out the old one for a new one and you should be good to go.  The contacts are in the switch and after about seventeen years they get corroded and fail.  No way to fix them and a replacement is the way to go.  If you can take the time rockauto.com is the cheapest route.  But, if you need the part sooner a locak parts store is the answer.
