Nissan Repair: 97 Sentra belt replacement, center bolt, v belt

Question
Hi,
I need to replace the serpentine belt on a 97 Sentra.  I know how to do this, and adjust it properly, because I wrote to you last winter about it.  But...I cheated, because it was cold, and didn't replace the belt.  I just tightened it up.  So now I am finally getting around to this task, as the belt shredded into tiny bits.  Oops.  Now I'm stuck as to how to get the V belt off. (water pump belt) I do have to take that off first, it appears.  But the adjuster for the V belt doesn't adjust it.  No, not at all. The bolt flops around loose, but the belt won't get loose.  Now what to do?  Thanks for being here, I appreciate you.  :D

Answer
Lisa,

First, loosen the center bolt on the idler/tensioner pulley and then loosen the adjustment bolt.  Now, remove the belt and then do the other one the same.  I would replace both belts at the same time and get a second set for the trunk since you might need them in the future.  Once the old belts are off put the new ones on and tighten the adjustment bolt until you have a half inch slack on the long side.  This is done be pressing lightly on the belt on the long side and see it move.  When it is tight you will be able to push it in a half inch.  After that, tighten the center bolt on the pulley that is the adjustment pulley and you are done.  You should check all the hoses while you are at it since rubber seems to degrade at about the same rate.
