Nissan Repair: Transmission, 5th gear, fifth gear

Question
Hi, I have recently purchased a Nissan SSS Pulsar Vector 88 model. When i am driving it it in 5th gear it often slip out. mainly when i am accelerating or putting it under load. i read your advice to lewis about the same problem. i was wondering how i would go about just getting 5th gear repaired. and if i could either do it myself, or take it to a shop and get them to do it. if that is the case how much am i looking at do you think. (I live in Australia, so if u do have a price let us know the currency you will be talkn in aswell). thanks Chief. hope you can help Jamie

Answer
Jamie,

The sycronizer, balking ring and gear need to be replaced for fifth gear.  In the US the parts would run around $350 plus the labor to install them.  You need a press and a tube of RTV sealant for the job and a day to take the transmission out and tear it down, rebuild fifth gear and reassemble it.  I would assume labor to be in the $800 to $1000 range.
