Nissan Repair: Nissan Maxiam 93 Brakes Spongy, internal seals, rear brakes

Question
Hi:

My maxima 93 SE brakes have started behaving strangely. The pedal suddenly not only feels spongy but it takes two or three pedal pumps to make it firm. Not only that, the rear brakes seems to stick with the rotors after driving the car for sometime (my guess is that as soon as the pads heat up they stick - not sure though).

I have checked the fluid level in the master cylinder and its topped up. I have also inspected the rear cylinders for any sign of leak but the system is dry. Also, no recent work has been done on the brake system as well. So I am not really sure what is the problem. I have exhausted my option, there any help in resolving the matter would be much appreciated

Thanks

Answer
Tash,

The master cylinder is going out so get it replaced now.  If the brakes take several pumps, at times, the seals are going out internally.  I say this since you say the fluid level is sufficient.  ALso, you did not say there were any leaks at the wheels.  Usually, if a caliper or brake line starts going out there will be brake fluid leaking at that wheel.  Also, if the internal seals in the master cylinder fail that could cause the rear brakes to take a few seconds to release.  You will need to bleed the brake system and I recomment Ford High Perfornace brake fluid.  You can get it at the Ford Dealership but have to ask for it by name because they sell their regular brake fluid.  Do not worry because it is DOT3 fluid it just has double the boiling point of regular brake fluid.  Never use synthetic no matter what anyone tells you as it will screw up your system.  Again, change the master cylinder now because it could fail at any time.
