Nissan Repair: 2000 Nissan Xterra cruise control, vehicle speed sensor, nissan xterra

Question
After turning on main dash switch and engaging set button on steering wheel at highway speeds the system will not engage. The cruise engaged indicator light on the instrument panel blinks rapidly until the main on/off switch is turned off. The system sometimes works perfectly just after getting on the road. The Nissan dealer, after much trial and error and 350.00 bucks, supposedly only replaced relay which did fix problem for a while. Even after the initial repair I had to return it the next week for same problem. They said it was working and no follow up repair needed and when I picked it up it did work for awhile, but now same problem. Please help. Thanks.

Answer
Kent,

Look to see if the clutch switch is defective if it is a manual transmission or the brake pedal switch regardless of the transmission that is in the Xterra.  Basically, one of the sensors that cuts the cruise control off is not setting properly and this causes the problem.  If you had said that the speedometer was doing strange things I would have said the vehicle speed sensor.  So, get up under the dash and see how those pedals rest against their stops and see what switches they depress.
