how do i replace the knock sensor on a 96 maxima
or how much would it cost to have a mechanic do it?

It is under the intake and quite difficult to access.  If you do not have a good stock of tools I would take it to a shop.  The part is about $150 and labor is about the same.  If they have to remove the intake have them change the antifreeze and the small hose under the intake while they are at it.  Also, you will get charged for the intake gasket so add another $65 for a gasket set.
