Recently bought a used Nissan Altima 2000, automatic, no maintenance history, with 72,000 miles on it.
Worked fine during test drives. Now the engine just dies at times.  Once while leaving a parking lot, once after 100 miles on interstate when stopping at off ramp and once drove 140 miles stopped for gas then it was dead when I went to start it. Finally did start in 3-4 minutes. Battery, starter and alternator have tested good twice.  I need it for a long trip. Any ideas?  Thank you.

Gary,

First, there are no codes?  Email me back if there are.  Second, check the fuel pressure and then check the coils.

Thank you for responding so quickly.  It started out with a different problem of loosing power after being driven for awhile, dropping down to 15 mph, but that has been cured by putting in a new fuel pump and strainer. I'm not a do it yourselfer, but my mechanics can't find the problem for it dying. Two of the three times it started up when you turned the key the next time. The one time it took awhile it seemed to me that the startup warning lights did not come on very strong so i was hoping it was a battery or starter issue, but as i said those check out ok. Early on there was a code P0733 - 3rd gear shift problem, and they did get a fuel pump code prior to replacing it, but no other codes. It has been 3 days now of normal intown driving since it last died.  This not knowing really makes planning difficult. Thanks for trying to help.

Answer
Gary,

If it is not cutting out now the pump and strainer probably cured the problem.  No codes makes it hard to diagnose if there were more problems.  Just remember that it is usually spark or fuel that is the cause of most problems.  So, the fuel problem has been identified and corrected.  If you get another problem of cutting out I would say the coils as they are a known problem on 2000 year models.
