Question
check engine light comes on, I checked codes fuel evap/recovery is what comes up. replaced the Gas cap and the light still comes on. when the weather is below 32 deg the light stays off but a strong smell of gas can be smelled by the drivers side rear bumper. no smell of gas when above 32 degs.

Answer
Eric,

I would first crawl under the truck and see if there is a gas leak where you put fuel in.  From under the truck there are rubber hoses that connect the fuel fill to the tank.  Also, there is a fuel vent line and a fuel pressure line that runs to the engine along with a vapor vent line.  Check all of these for signs of fuel leakage.  Remember, that the closed fuel system is monitored and if there is even a small leak, like you ran over something and it cut a hose, or a clamp has wored loose, this will cause the check engine light to come on with the evap/recovery code.  Also, if you overfill the tank it will cause the system to do the same thing.
