Nissan Repair: Nissan Maxima Check Engine light, malfunction indicator light, nissan maxima

Question
I own a 1996 Nissan Maxima with 93000 miles on it.  The Malfunction indicator light just came on a few days ago.  The car is running fine, the  owner's manual says its drivable, but does mention that this means there is a problem with emissions.  How worried should I be?

Answer
David,

You have a couple of choices here.  First, you could go to the dealer and get violated.  But, if it were me and I wanted to know what was the problem I would go to Autozone or Checker and get them to read the code for you for free.  Another option is to buy the computer scanner for about $65 bucks and then you can read the code yourself and clear the code after you correct or replace the problem part.  If you drive it with the MIL on the computer goes into a pre programmed mode that reduces the gas mileage of your car.  So, the sooner the better on finding out what the problem is.
