Nissan Repair: Ignition switch replacement?, nissan 4x4, haynes manual

Question
Hello,
I have a 1989 Nissan 4x4 pickup SE-V6 and all the electrical on the dashboard works intermitantly (radio, wipers, fan, ac).  Half the time I turn the ignition everything works fine, the other half of the time none of it works.  If in a 'not working mode', sometimes it all pops on while driving down the road, and then never shuts off again.

Recently I just figured out that when in a 'not working mode', if I turn the ignition to the first click (but not actually turn the motor over), all the electrical works all the time.

Does this sound like a faulty ignition switch?  If so, is this something a novice can replace that's fairly handy with small repairs?  What is a rough estimate for parts and labor if done at a dealer?

Thank you.

Answer
Aaron,

It is a pretty easy change out with the cover needing to be removed to get access to the switch.  A dealer is going to charge you a couple of hundred in labor plus parts.  Check with your local parts store and see what a switch goes for.  A haynes manual has a pretty good step by step to getting the switch out.  The nice part is yours still turns and that makes it much easier to change.  When the switch is broken is really is a pain to remove.  Once the cover is off you can get access to the switch and you will see the screw that holds it in.  Be sure to take the battery loose before you proceed.
