Nissan Repair: 97 Altima front suspension noise., nissan altima gxe, sway bar links

Question
I have a 97.5 Nissan Altima GXE that when traveling over bumps at a slow speed I hear a clunking noise on the right hand (passengers) side of the car as the tire travels up and down. I had the same issue (clunking noise when going over bumps) with the rear suspension and fixed it by replacing the sway bar links and bushings.  I recently replaced the clutch and inspected all the front end components and replaced the sway bar links and also the half shaft on the right side (because of a ripped boot). Inner and outer tie rods, ball joint and A-arm bushings all seem fine. I can't seem to simulate the problem in my garage by bouncing the front or moving the steering wheel back and forth, nor do I see any loose components.  I don't see any leakage from the strut.  The car doesn't make the clunking noise when traveling over 30 mph or so and it drives and handles fine. I noticed an earlier post 12/25/05 you mentioned the right side strut bearing was an issue on this model.  Could you elaborate more details/symptoms on this or offer any suggestions on my issue.  Thanks!

Answer
Darrell,

It is probable the strut bearing.  This is the metal bearing that the strut sticks through at the strut tower.  Open the hoon and look at the top of the strut tower and you will see three bolts around the venter bolt.  These three bolts hold the strut bearing.  Some Nissan cars have a problem with these getting loose and then, when you go over bumps, they make a clunking noise.
