Nissan Repair: Broken Exhaust Manifold Bolts, broken bolts, nissan maxima

Question
Hi...just got a 1993 Nissan Maxima, & found 4 broken exhaust manifold bolts.  Two mechanics:  one says fix NOW or risk burnt valves; other says can wait a few months (repair will cost about $1000).  So far, not much noise from manifold.  Who is right-- can I wait?

Thanks -
Ken

Answer
Ken,

Correct the problem now if you do not want warped and burnt exhaust valves.  You could do it yourself if you have the time.  It is just a matter of taking the manifolds off and then getting the broken bolts out.  Most break off where there is enough left to get Vice Grips on them and the others will have to be drilled and extracted.  Yes, it is a pain in the butt and the $1000 is worth it since I really hate doing it.  The thing is it takes patience and time.  If you drill off into the aliminum head you are going to have more problems.  But, it does have to be done now!  Also, if you wait the manifold will have to be replaced too.  If one side has broken bolts be wure to check the other side and see if it has broken ones too.  Also, make sure they true the manifolds before they are reinstalled.  Have them show you with a straight edge that the manifolds are not warped or you will go through another round of broken bolts down the road.
