Nissan Repair: Nissan Maxima (1996), nissan maxima, vent area

Question
Our  Maxima's (1996) stereo is getting power, however, it doe not emit sound until the inside of the car & the engine is good and warm for a long period of time which sometimes takes up to 45 minutes in the winter. My husband is very handy with car repair however, he cannot figure out how to remove the dash portion that surrounds the stereo. Can you help? He feels like he could fix the problem (more than likely a loose wire?) if he could just figure out how to get to it.
Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide.  Sharon Poindexter

Answer
Sharon,

It is probably the head unit that is going out on the car.  You probably have a Bose head unit and if you do getting it repaired is cheaper than changing everything out.  You see, with a Bose the speakers are amplified and require a Bose headunit to run them.  If you change the headunit to a non Bose you will have to change out all the speakers too or get an adapter kit to run the speakers with the non Bose headunit.  On taking the unit out of the car there are two screws at the lower edge of the console, just below the radio and, if memory serves me correctly, there are a couple in the center vent area.  If you do have the Bose unit here is a site that you can contact to get it repaired.  http://www.sound-repair.com/
