Nissan Repair: fuel injection, nissan maxima, control regulator

Question
the car had been run on an empty tamk. (thanx to my son) later on that evening the car would not start. I have replaced the fuel pump pressure control regulator and the fuel filter. the car had a hard time starting
i manually fed gas thru the intake and the car stayed on with the gas that i had manually put in. when i pressed the gas pedal it seemed as if the gar would grab it but it died. so it only ran with the gas in the intake.
I just cant figure out why! i did check the fuses and did the test light thing but to no avail. it is a 1999 nissan maxima.
thank you Mr Sudderth your input is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Check to make sure that the fuel pump is working by checking the pressure to the injector rail.  If there is no pressure check to see that the pump is working and if not check the circuit and if the circuit is good replace the pump.  Is the check engine light on?  If it is read the codes and see.  You need to be careful on putting gas in the intake track as it can explode in a backfire condition.  Make sure that you have the intake hose connected and tight as the car has a air meter that will go nuts if it is not hooked up.  If you were attempting to start the car with this hose that goes between the throttle body and the air meter off it will cause the hard start problem and the problem with it cutting off.
