Nissan Repair: Engine, power steering pump, nissan pathfinder

Question
92 Nissan Pathfinder
170,000 miles

1)  I can hear the engine knocking when I step on the gas when trying to accelerate up a hill or onto the freeway.  The timing is correct on the car.  Any insight?

2)  I have discovered that the power steering pump is making noise.  It sounds like a worn bearing.  Would a power steering pump repair kit help the problem?  Or would I have to replace the whole steering pump?

Answer
Do a tuneup on the engine and use premium gas and the knock should be gone.  That is, if it is a spark knock.  If it is a rod knock change to a thicker oil like 10W40 instear of 5W30.  If that does not correct the problem you are looking at a crank kit to close up the tolerances.  But, from the sounds of it I would be looking at the tuneup and good gas.  Replace the power steering pump.
