Nissan Repair: nissan micra will not start, jumper cables, nissan micra

Question
The battery is fine - lights ok and green charge light showing on the battery. When I turn the key, all that happens is a loud click  ... and that's it. All the normal lights on the dash show but it just clicks. Does not turn over and so cannot start it. Please, what might be the problem and is it something I can fix myself with minimal tools?

Answer
It sounds like the starter is locked up.  Either the brushes are gone or the bearings are shot.  You can check this by removing the starter and putting it on the ground.  Now, with jumper cables connected to the battery clamp the negative on the ear of the starter.  Put your foot on the starter to keep it from moving and touch the positive to the terminal.  If the starter spins and the bendix spins out it is good.  If nothing happens you have a bad starter.
