Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Re: Buick park ave

Question
Hi Tom,

This morning I put back in the old/original HO2 Sensor up front, to start back at square one. Went to my friend's garage and just for the heck of it, plugged in my Actron. I could not believe my eyes when I saw no codes. I was baffled. And it had 6 montiors ready. So it was inspected, finally. After all the work I've put into this, only to have to go back to square one with the old sensor and voila! I don't understand it. There were issues with vacuum and other sensors before, which started this all. The O2 sensor was the first with the P1133 fuel and air metering. So to go all the way back to the beginning with the original part... Maybe you can provide some detail for me as to why that is.

Of course, I have been going one step forward and 2 steps back. That darn alignment has me unhappy. Going down the road and braking moderately, it pulls to the left, almost shifty. It could be a sticky caliper, but I find that hard to believe when 2 hours before the alignment, it was good. From the paperwork, the toe on front left went from -.26 degrees, to .02 degrees final. The right front toe went from -.96 degrees to .02 degrees final. Rear left went from .22 degrees to .00 degrees and the RR went from .09 degrees to .03 degrees final. Camber is LF -.6, RF -.5, LR -1.0 and RR -.6 respectively. I think I may have to get under that front and make sure things are tight, ala sway bar bushings etc, check front brakes, although that is more precautionary than anything. I don't want to have to bring it back again. It's just funny how sometimes you try to do the right thing and it ends up worse than before. That's why my motto is usually if it aint broke, don't fix it. Anyway, what do you think? Thanks, Mike

Answer
HI MIKE,,WELL LETS START OUT WITH WHY THE PO1133 SET FROM DAY ONE..YOU DID SAY THAT YOU HAD VACUUM LEAKS..THIS WOULD CAUSE THIS FOR SURE..BUT YOU THOUGHT THAT IT WAS THE SENSORS FAULT
SO YOU REPLACED IT..ALL ALONG IT WAS A VACUUM LEAK CAUSING THIS CODE...THIS WOULD BE MY GUESS..
AS FOR THE ALIGNMENT ISSUE..IF YOU DRIVE THIS DOWN A FLAT ROAD NO FOOT ON THE BRAKES IF THE CAR GOES STRAIGHT THEN WE CAN ASSUME THE ALIGNMENT IS OK...ALIGNMENT WILL MAKE A CAR PULL LEFT OR RIGHT, BUMP STEER OR STEERING WHEEL OFF CENTER [WHICH YOURS IS..BUT WITH THAT BEING SAID A WHEEL THAT IS NOT CENTERED DOES NOT MEAN THE ALIGNMENT IS OFF..IT COULD BE THAT THE GUY DID NOT CENTER THE WHEEL CORRECT  OR THE TIE ROD SLEEVES HAVE ALOT OF RUST BUILT UP MAKING THEM TURN HARD TO NOT CENTER THE WHEEL VERY GOOD.....BUT LETS SAY THE WHEEL WAS CENTERED OK ALL ALONG AND NOW YOU HIT A POT HOLE AND NOW THE WHEEL IS OFF..SO WE KNOW FOR SURE THE ALIGNMENT IS OFF. MAKE SENSE??
SO IF I AM READING THIS CORRECT WHEN YOU [BRAKE] THE CAR PULLS TO THE LEFT ONLY WHEN BRAKING.
THIS IS FOR SURE A BRAKE PROBLEM...THE RIGHT FRONT CALIPER IS NOT WORKING AS IT SHOULD..THE SLIDES COULD BE RUSTED IN PLACE OR THE CALIPER PISTON ITSELF IS STARTING TO STICK.[HANGING UP] THIS ALIGNMENT MIGHT OF BEEN SO FOR OFF BEFORE IT WAS DONE THAT IT WAS OVER COMPENSATING THE PULLING TO THE LEFT. AFTER THE ALIGNMENT WAS DONE YOU NOW HAVE THIS PROBLEM...JUST A GUESS..I WOULD TRY TO PUSH THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE PISTON BACK INTO ITS BORE ALL THE WAY AND FREE UP THE CALIPER SLIDES AND BUSHINGS IF THEY ARE RUSTED IN PLACE AND SEE IF THIS CORRECTS YOUR PROBLEM..IF IT HELPS THE PROBLEM BUT NOT 100% CHANGE THE CALIPER AND MAKE SURE BRAKE FLUID DRIPS OUT OF THE BRAKE HOSE AS WELL. IF NOT THE HOSE MAYBE COLLAPSED..IF SO CHANGE THIS BEFORE THE CALIPER. DRIVE IT AND SEE IF IT IS CURED....LET ME KNOW HOW THIS GOES AND GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND I AM GLAD YOUR CAR PASSED ITS NYS INSP...  TOM...
