Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1998 buick skylark surging at start up, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
Hi, My car sometimes surges from low idle to over 2.5 rpm.  It happens very sporadically.  Three or four days in a row and then days or weeks with it running fine.  If I just start the car and I start driving, with in 30 seconds the surging stops.  The check engine light has also been on for some time.  The car is the GS package and has the 3.1 liter.  I have replaced the head gaskets and intake manifold gaskets.  Any help would be great!

Answer
Hi
My BEST advice would to go have the check engine light diagnosed.
You can get this done for free or at a reduced rate at National chain repair shops (Meineke, Midas, Pepboys, firestone, etc...) OR at NAtional parts stores (Autozone, Advanced, NAPA, etc...)
That MAY very well tell you what your problem is OR could be.
I would suspect the MAF(Mass Air Flow) sensor, wiring for sensor or a Vacuum leak at the top of throttle body. Or A vacuum leak in general CAN cause bad MAP(Manifold Absolute Pressure) readings and in turn create a surging  in an attempt to idle down vehicle.
Get the Check Engine Light diagnosed first, though, Kyle.
It will probabally save you time and $$$$$ in the long run.
I Hope this helps
Good Luck
