Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette, advanced auto parts, oldsmobile silhouette

Question
1999 Olds. Silhouette  3.4 v6.
Alternator went out.  Went by the repair manual removed it.  It is 125 amp.  Went to Advanced auto parts purchased a rebuilt one.  replaced it.  Started the engine. the volt meter I used showed between 13.5 and 13.75. After a few moments the battery warning lamp showed on the dash. checked volt meter again and it was only 13.5.  reved the engine and the voltage dropped to 11 volts a discharge.  The alternator also was very hot to the touch.  Do you think I have a bad alternator or something else.  I didn't get them to bench test the alternator in the store before I left with it.
Thanks,
Brad Jackson

Answer
Hi
You May want to make sure they are giving you the correct Alt.
Yours is PCM pulse width controlled. If they give you an alternator with the improper Voltage regulator in it, it will act similar to this.
If it is the correct one, I would suspect a faulty Alternator.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck
