Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1986 Olds stalling, coolant temperature sensor, 1986 olds cutlass

Question
Hi Van,
My 1986 Olds cutlass ceira 2.8 v6 stops after 1/2 hr drive or if i stop for shopping and when start again it will run for few meters and stop. I have to squat gas in to the carb after the engine cool down ant it will start as usual. What could be the reason?
I have noticed that my radiator fan is not starting until the temperature is at the normal limits ( end of white lines and just under the red lines in the gauge) is that normal?
Is there any way i can set the thermostat a little lower?
Also where is the location of the thermostat?

Waiting for your answer.
Thanks
Abraham

Answer
Hello Abraham,
As an 86, does it have a carb, or is it fuel injected.
If carb, I would check the accelerator pump, and make sure the choke is properly adjusted.
If it is fuel injected, it is possible that both problems are related to the temperature sensor.
It should be near the thermostat housing, which is where the top radiator hose connects to the engine.

That dying when hot sounds like vaporlocking, so getting that fan working sooner may help with that also. It is operated by a relay, but the relay is controlled by the ECM, which uses readings from the coolant temperature sensor, so the coolant temp sensor is where I would probably start.
