Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 92 buick lesabre, neutral safety switch, buick lesabre

Question
hello, I have a 92 buick lesabre that will not start. I turn the key and the only thing that happens are the normal dash ign lights ect..., I put a new starter on and checked fuses and battery are all good. When I turn the key I can hear a "very light" click sound.  Could it be the key itself?  thanks, Randy

Answer
Probably not the key, since all it does is turn the lock cylinder, which is connected to the ignition switch by a rod, about ten inches long, running down the side of the steering column.
The actual ignition switch is down there, above the brake pedal.
The neutral safety switch also.
They could be out of adjustment. Have you tried shifting it to neutral, and starting it there?

If that doesn't seem to be the problem, I would go to the starter, and measure voltage.
Should be battery voltage on the large terminal all the time.
Then, on the small terminal, when the ignition switch is turned to start, there should be battery voltage there.
If there is none, go back to the ignition switch, or the connector through the firewall.
If there is just some voltage, but not nearly battery voltage, it is probably a loose wire connector, or again, one of those switches.

If you get full battery voltage at that small terminal, then the starter, or the solenoid is bad.
That is the solenoid, mounted to the starter, where you are checking for voltage.

Most parts stores will bench test the starter for free.
