Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 96 grand am shifting problem, google search, grand am

when I start my 96 grand am the service engine light and the ETS light will stay on when these two lights are on at the same time the car will not shift right.when the are off car runs great? plz anyone with and answer

I don't know the answer, cause I don't know what an ETS light is for, but it is puting the ecm in a "limp in" mode, and that is probably why it doesn't shift right.

I am going to do a Google search for pontiac ETS light in a minute....you should do the same.

Another thought is wiggle the ignition key a little while the light is on to see if it might be not making great contact inside the switch.
