Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: guages not working, buick lesabre, loose wires

Question
Hello,

How are you? I hope you are able to help me with this problem.  I hope it is something I can repair myself before I have to bring it in for a costly bill.

My car is a 97 buick lesabre limited edition. It only has 60k miles because we rarely use the car. The speedometer and tachometer stops working from time to time. As time goes on, it works less and less. The other gauges work fine but the speedometer and tachometer always stop working together at the same time, if one doesnt work, the other will not work too. The needles to both of these guages sometimes flutter or go up and down wildly. When they are not working they are all the way down at zero. Do you have any idea what the problem is and how I can diagnose it? I don't know if it's loose wires or bad parts. Any comment would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

Jim

Answer
You have 3 possibilities:

1. The speed sensor that is mounted near the back of the transmission may be faulty.

2. The speedometer stepper motor may be faulty in the dash.

3. The re is a wiring fault somewhere in between the above.

This repair is going to require special equipment to diagnose.
