Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1988 Buick Century temp light and serv eng light, electric cooling fans, buick century

Question
There has never been a problem with how the engine runs, it has always been well maintained. There have been no leaks, either of oil or coolant, and it doesn't burn oil or run low on either, even during summer months. Now this morning, ten minutes out on the way to work, the temperature light comes on... followed a few moments later by the service engine soon light.  Got the car over two miles from there to a service center, which isn't open yet *sigh* And when engine was shut off, started making those knocking, creaking noises, that they make when it's too hot...

Any idea what could be causing this?

The oil was just changed, and filter replaced, one month ago...

HElllllllllpppppppppppppp!!!

Answer
Hi,Scott

There are a couple of things that can cause your overheating condition, either low on coolant due to a leak, the electric cooling fans failed to come on either due to the fans themselves failing, the fan relay inop,or the fans fuses went open, also no flow or restriction in the cooling sys,if you made it to a shop i hope they can diagnose and repair the overheating condition,if not let me know,Thanks.
