Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Broken Speedometer & Odometer, buick skylark, transmission control module

Question
Hi there Ed
Hope this isn't too much, I have a followup question to the one below.
since my speedometer and odometer have not been working.  All of the guages in my panel now sometimes just go crazy, moving every which way, and then sometimes they stop and are dead.  One morning while driving my car made a brief buzzing noise (sounded like on the drivers side possibly from behind the dash), and then my CHECK ENGINE, ABS, and BRAKE warning lights came on.  Immediately the car had very little "get-up and go".  In my fuse box under the hood 2 fuses were blown, I replaced them and the car drove normal, and the next day the CHECK ENGINE light went off.  While the CHECK ENGINE light was on though, I had the codes scanned and these are the codes that came up (P0738-PCM says the Transmission Control Module Engine Speed Output is too low), (P0753-PCM detected a short or open cirtuit in the Electrical Circuit for Solenoid A), (P1864-Transmission Transfer Case Contact Plate Power has either short or open circuit).  I realize this may be quite a complicated fix and would not mind taking it somewhere I just want to kind of know what I should be looking for them to tell me.  I also thaught that if I could just test the VSS then I could replace it if it were bad because I read it could cause those other parts to malfunction if it were bad, unfortunately I cannot locate it, the manual says top of transaxle.  So any advice would be greatly appreciated and helpful, thank you for our time.

Question -
I have a 96 Buick Skylark, V6 3.1 ltr with auto-trans.  Over time my speedometer and odometer have quite working, it started off my speedo would drop down to zero periodicaly, then it would sit at zero and sometimes go up to speed and eventually drop to zero, Everytime my speedo was at zero my odometer would not turn either, now both have completely stopped working.  The engine light has never come on, (but I know it works), and the Cruise control still works fine.  Any help would be great, thanks!

Hi,Allen

I took at a look at the speedo problem and what it seems to be is a failed IPC {inst panel cluster},the cluster {speedo}is also a microprocessor getting the speed inputs from the PCM{powertrain Computer} the PCM gets inputs from the VSS{vehicle speed sensor}..usually if you have a failed VSS or PCM your cruise control would stop working, the cruise module gets inputs from both the PCM and the VSS,in your case the cruise works so that means all is well with the PCM and the VSS,looks like the IPC just had a failure...replace the IPC or send it out for repair, the local dealership can send those out for repair, any GM parts dept can help you with sending it out, usually on an exchange basis,it is expensive for this anywere from 250 to 700,but it maybe the better choice since a junkyard{used}one you may end up with the same problem.let me know how it works out and if you need more help feel free to contact me.Thank you.

Answer
Hi,Allen

Sounds like you have a short to ground at the transaxle harness, the fuse that probably went open was the ERLS fuse, this is a pink wire ckt #439,that runs from the fuse box to the transaxle,it supplies battey voltage to the 1-2 shift solenoid and also the TCC,see if you can trace the harness starting from the transaxle, its a harness that comes out of the left side of the trans and then runs along the ft portion of the engine cradle there is also a gray round connector that connects the transaxle harness to the engine harness, look for signs of rubbing through or exhaust pipes burning through, the VSS is located on the right hand transmission extension housing, and is mounted on top of the housing, look at your right side inner cv joint, what the joint goes into on the side of the trans is the right extension housing and the VSS is located on top, black connector with 2 wires.
