Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 2001 Alero Cruise Control, brake light switch, exact vehicle

Question
When I attempt to turn on the cruise control for my 2001 Alero (2.4 liter), I can push the button in to enable the cruise, but I have to hold the button in for it to stay active.  Is this a problem with the enabling switch on the cruise control?  If it is, can I just replace the switch or does the entire cruise control mechanism (cruise button, accelerate/decelerate buttons) need to be replaced?

The only repair history has been with the drivers side electric window motor.

Thank you,
Todd

Answer
Hello Todd,
I really think the problem will be in the module under the hood, but I would check all the fuses first.
There is also the possibility the brake light switch is causing the problem, so a trip to the public library would be worth while.
In the refference section, they have all the manuals. Find one for your exact vehicle, and follow the step by step test proceedure, so you aren't just randomly replacing parts.

One other spot to check, is make sure the stop lights in the back window are not burned out.
