Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1986 Buick Century idles high, throttle linkage, buick century

Question
I was recently given an 86 Buick Century Limited. V6,carbureted, 75,000 miles. This car will not idle down. The faster I drive , the higher it idles when I slow down. Hubby has visualized choke and of course it idled properly with air cleaner cover off to check the choke. Starting warm or cold engine it still acts the same.
I know Granny had some work done on the carb before but I don't know specifics.

Answer
Hello Tracey,
Sounds to me like the air cleaner is being pulled down against the throttle linkage when the cover is tightened on.
Possible also that the screws holding the carb together, or to the manifold are slightly loose, and the air cleaner, sitting on some of the hoses, is pulling it up when tightened, and allowing an air leak, although the first suggestion above is more likely.

Try with the engine off, press the gas pedal down to the floor, and gently let off.
Then, while listening, and watching the throttle linkage under the air cleaner edge, slowly and quietly loosen the wing nut, and see if you can tell if the throttle relaxes into the curb idle position as the air cleaner is loosened.
