Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, oldsmobile cutlass supreme, oldsmobile cutlass

Question
My son has a Oldsmobile Cutlass (I think it is a 92), He has replaced both the battery and the alternator, he had them both tested and they were dead, but the service engine soon and the charge battery keeps coming on. The car seems to run fine for a while then the light come on and it looses power while driving and dies.

Answer
Hello Norma,
I don't know if that car still requires the alternator bulb to excite the alternator or not. But if the bulb in the dash is blown, it may not charge.
I also had a Monte Carlo that had a wire connection right near the alternator, and the connector was all melted from a poor connection. It had several wires, but the large charging wire from the alternator was one of them, and if that wire can't carry power, it can't keep the battery charged.
I just cut the connector out of the system, and spliced each of the wires to its appropriate mate, and did away with the connector.
The large wire on the back of the alternator should have battery voltage all the time if it is good.
It should show about 14 volts with the engine running.
