Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: car starts and dies immedietly, oil pressure switch, crankshaft position sensor

Question
i have a 1989 olds 88 3200 series and when its cold especially it starts and dies immedietly no repair has been done and no check engine light please help

Answer
Hello Robert,
I would search the fuel system to see if the pump continues to run. I personally would connect a fuel pressure tester, and watch it. The pressure should be present till AFTER the engine dies.
Normally, when the key is turned to run, the pump will run for two to three seconds. Then, if there is a crank signal from the crankshaft position sensor, the ecm will keep the fuel pump relay closed, and run the pump.
Once oil pressure reachec 4 PSI, there is an oil pressure switch that closes, and also sends power to the fuel pump, so try starting it a few times real soon after it dies. If it takes off and runs, it could be because you force the pump to run on oil pressure control, and I would check the fuel pump relay, and its controls.
You can listen to the pump in the tank while someone else starts it, and see if it quits running before the engine dies, which would go along with what I am saying.
