Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Toronado wont start, intake manifold gasket, screw driver

Question
I just replaced the carb and intake manifold gasket on my 69 olds toronado and it will turn over but not start( I went with an edelbrock 1411 with electric choke, the engine is all stock otherwise).  I was told the timing is probably off from pulling the distributor, but I'm not sure how to fix or even check that without the car running. I checked the rotor and the tab is still good, so I turned it towards the #1 plug wire but no luck. Thank you very much for your time.

the way to time this now is pull spark plug out of no.1  cyl
then turn the crank by hand and till  the pistion is all the way up thin screw driver thhrew plug hole . then pull dis and drop back in face rotor toward no.1 put plug and wire back in tighten dis. try to start should be on time then time while runing with light pete
