Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 88 Buick regal 2.8L V6, olds cutlass supreme, olds cutlass

Question
Hi,
My car has been sputtering-like intermittently, only upon acceleration or load. Not all the time, but it seems to do it most when it's cold. Yet it has done it hot before too. I looked under the hood and saw the mass airflow unhooked on one end. I fixed it and it looked clean and the air filter is almost ready to be replaced. This didnt make a difference, although I was sure it would be the fix, if the MAF is not hooked then airflow is not right and the car doesn't run right. Although I checked the codes and nothing. Shouldn't there be some code stored? Then I thought maybe it's the plugs, I tune it every year, or maybe the wires. Then I thought again maybe the coils, but I replaced them only a few years back and let me tell you, they arent cheap. I can do the fixing, I just dont know what to fix and I don't want to blindly spend money, that I don't have, on parts that I dont really need. Is there a way to find out exactly what is causing this? Also, one other thing if you wouldnt mind. I was given steel wheels w/tires, came off a 95 Olds cutlass supreme,
15" tires 205 70/15, the exact same tire as my car. Should these be a direct fit for my car since they are of the same family make? Thanks so much for taking the time to read through this mess! Much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mike,
The sputtering sounds fuel related to me, like a dirty filter or injectors.
I would test the pressure, but just replacing the filter and adding some injector cleaner to the fuel tank might fix it.
A vacuum leak could also cause it. Clean the EGR valve.

I would expect the wheels to fit, but trying them is easiest way to be sure.
