Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: A/C BLOWER, olds cutlass ciera, olds cutlass

Question
HI,
THANKS FOR TAKING MY QUESTION. MY '87 OLDS CUTLASS CIERA, 4 CYL, 2.5 ENGINE IS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE HIGH SETTING ON THE A/C BLOWER. IT WILL INTERMITTENTLY WORK, SOMETIMES NOT AT ALL. THE A/C CLUTCH ENGAGES AND THERE IS FREON IN THE SYSTEM. COULD THIS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS PROBLEM: THE FAN MOTOR IS WIRED DIRECTLY TO THE IGNITION SWITCH BECAUSE WHEN IT WASN'T, THE FAN WOULDN'T COME ON SOMETIMES (EVEN THOUGH THE FAN WAS CHANGED ONCE BEFORE}.  ONE OTHER PROBLEM: THE DOOR LOCKS ARE DIFFICULT TO OPEN AND EVEN THOUGH THE BACK DOOR IS LOCKED, IT COULD EASILY POP ITSELF OPEN ON A CURVY TURN. ALSO, APPROX-IMATELY HOW MUCH WOULD SUCH A REPAIR ON THE A/C BLOWER COST?  THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR ANSWERS.

Answer
Your original problem with the fan speeds is caused by a failure of the BLOWER RESISTOR of which mounts in the plastic blower fan housing right near the blower fan motor for your heat and ac. There are about 3 or 4 wires that plug into this resistor and it is held into the oplastic jousing by 2 small screws. This resistor when you remove it will have 2 or 3 coils of wire on the backside and it will fit in your hand (for size purposes).

Now your probklem is that in the wiring harness that connects to this resistor just follow the electrical harness backwards from the resistor to where it plugs into the main electrical harness and when you pull this connection apart you will see all the 3 or 4 connections burnt to a crisp.

The resistor for your ac/heater fan motor is ONLY available thru your Oldsmobile dealers service department.
