Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Voltemeter ABS light, olds cutlass supreme, olds cutlass

Question
I have a 1994 olds Cutlass Supreme SL. A couple of days ago my voltemeter starting reading in the low red zone. Yesterday and today it was reading more in the low red zone and my ABS light came on and stayed on. Also my check gages light came on. The car is currently starting and running fine. I am not sure what the problem is. I plan on taking it to get it checked out but I was hoping you could shed some light on the problem and if it will be o.k. to drive until I get it looked at. It was fine prior to this. It has become extremely hot outside and I am running the air conditioner. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Thanks for any insight you can give.

Answer
You should NOT be driving the vehicle with a faulty charging system as you can cause all sorts of computer problems and if the voltage gets below 7 volts going into the computer you are going to be THUMBING for a ride because the computer will shut off the engine to protect the computer(s).

If you take the alternator OFF the car and hand carry it into any major auto parts store such as autozone, napa, checkers, pep boys they will test it for FREE.

I would also take out the battery and they will test that for you also for FREE.
