Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Speedometer, junk yard parts, output shaft

Question
The speedometer on my '91 LeSabre stopped working. I have changed the speed sensor and have tried 4 instrument cluster replacements (all parts from junk yard cars).  Still does not work.  I have been told that the computer is getting a signal from the sensor but the cluster is not getting a signal from the computer.  HELP!

Answer
NEVER EVER purchase and install JUNK YARD parts. Especially electronic parts. You have no way to tell if the part is faulty when you but it and if it IS, It can destroy other components within your vehicles electronics.

There is a test procedure that you can do to determine if the problem is either the:

1. Speed sensor.
2. A problem with the gear on the transmission output shaft.
3. A wiring problem from the speed sensor to the computer.
4. A wiring problem from the computer to the cluster.
5. A faulty cluster.

Your problem could also be a bad brand new speed sensor of which is WHY you do the tests FIRST.

Now you have to test the speed sensor, The wiring to the computer, the computer, the wiring from the computer to the cluster and finally the cluster.

Hopefuuly those junk yard clusters did not have other problems that may have damaged other components and instead of just no speedometer you may now have other cluster gage problems due to a possible faulty junk yard cluster.

You need an electrical schematuic and the diagnostic procedures in order to TEST the system.

I can provide the testing information, However, You will need to contact me at:
