Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Buick code 34, mass air flow sensor, air flow sensor

Question
I have a Buick 89, automatic, 6 cylinders, I'm not sure about displacement, probably 3.8, about 180,000 miles, fuel injection.

It got a new water pump about three months ago. And the last decent tune up was a year ago, but cables and spark plugs were changed a few days ago. I also switched to 87 gas for about ten months, but returned to 89 two weeks ago, when I learned that it was what they used to put in it.

About three months ago, I took it to the mountains, an uphill trip of about an hour straight.

The last four days, the engine sounds slightly rough while idling and while accelerating, a bit more noticably when the engine shifts.  Sometimes the engine dies while idling.  If the car is not used for a day, it will work fine for about 15 minutes. We haven't moved it for two days.

The code scanner gave me code 34.  Now, I know it means the Mass Air Flow sensor reports less air entering the engine. What I don't know is where am I supposed to check to fix it, or is it directly related to the code reading, you konw how sometimes it could be something else making the computer give a false code.

So, what am I suposed to look for?

Answer
You MUST replace the MAF sensor as this was a very common failure on the late 80's GM vehicles.

I have seen brand NEW ones right out of the box that were faulty so be careful as you might get a faulty one of which will give you the same code again.
