Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 93 cutlass ciera cranks but wont start, cutlass ciera, tcc solenoid

Question
Hello,

My 93 Ciera with 3.3l recently had a starter replaced.  After the work was performed the car was starting harder than before.  Also here in the last few weeks I noticed a fuel odor from the back seat end of the car and just yesterday the car would not start at all but it still cranks. Could this be the fuel pump, if so are these hard to replace yourself?

In another unrelated problem the transmission during deaccleration was making a grinding sound and surging before the car stopped.  Once stopped it would stall.  I experienced a similar problem with an 88 century I had and it was the torque converter.  I unplugged it on my Cutlass and it runs fine now.  The only thing is that the ECM is spitting back a 2nd and 3rd gear shift circuit fault.  Could the torque sensor be bad instead of the converter?  Can I leave the converter unplugged indefinatly without any future engine damage occurring?

Thank's
Chris Zeman

Answer
If you can SMELL gas look for a leak under the vehicle within the fuel lines.

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump.

It is NOT recommended that you leave the 93 transmission unplugged. Fix the fault of which is most likely the TCC solenoid.
