Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: cramshaft problem or head problem? 176000 + miles, olds cutlass, vacuum line

Question
1992 olds cutlass  cruiser wagon, 2.5L 4 cly, transaxle.  Was running great until a vacuum hose broke.  Wife kept on driving even when I told her she could mess up engine timing or worse.

Now engine runs great in idle or less then 25, until one tries to gas it , engine back fires through throttle body, almost dies, but slowly picks up speed and runs great again.

With this high milage on engine, I am willing to get heads rebuilt, but will that solve my problem?  could she have damaged the camshaft or timing chain?  How do I check if camshaft problem without pulling engine?  What should I do next?

Going to pull push rods, see if any are bent, check the rockers for wear, willing to pull heads and check lifters, but if nothing is wrong with that, is it a camshaft problem?  How do I check that?                Thank You!

Answer
WHAT vacuum line BROKE ?.  Run a compression test on each cylinder as I doubt that your problem is internal engine damage but more likely an exhaust restriction which most likely has clogged the catalytic converter with massive amounts of fuel thus plugging up the converter with carbon.

Perform an exhaust BACK PRESSURE test on the exhaust system BEFORE you go thinking ENGINE problems.
