Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: what could be wrong with my transmission?, oldsmoble cutlass, power steering pump

Question
i have a 1998 oldsmoble cutlass, my trans does not seem like its shifting properly. i can hear what sounds like a whinnung sound. the rpm's running @ 2. could this be a sensor? if not what else could it be? any information you could provide for me would be great. thank you

Answer
Without actually hearing this noise I would be more prone to think that the power steering pump is making the noise UNLESS you are POSITIVE that the noise is coming from the front portion of the transmission where it attaches to the engine.

If this is the case you could have a problem with the STARTER whereas the small engagement gaer (bendix) within the starter is hung up in the teeth of the flywhell or you could have a torque converter noise of which is quite rare.

If in FACT the transmission is NOT shifting properly when was the last time you checked the fluid level in the transmission and or had the fluid and filter replaced ?.
